D-Link DES-1024D 24-Ports 10/100 Fast Ethernet Unmanaged Rack Mount Switch

The D-Link DES-1024D 24-Port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Unmanaged Rack Mount Switch is a practical network expansion solution for small offices, shops, educational environments, CCTV-related network installations and other setups that need a large number of wired Ethernet connections without complicated configuration. It provides 24 Ethernet ports supporting 10Mbps and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet, allowing multiple computers, printers, access points, IP devices and other compatible network equipment to be connected through a single switch.

Designed as an unmanaged switch, the DES-1024D follows a straightforward plug-and-play approach. There is no requirement for complicated network configuration or management software for normal operation. Connect the switch to power, connect Ethernet cables to the available ports, and the switch automatically handles link negotiation and forwarding between connected devices. D-Link also describes the DES-1024D as suitable for both desktop and rackmount installation, making it flexible for different network environments.

D-Link DES-1024D 24-Port Fast Ethernet Switch in Bangladesh

For businesses and organisations that need more wired network ports at a reasonable cost, the D-Link DES-1024D offers 24-port Fast Ethernet connectivity in a compact rackmountable form factor. It is particularly appropriate where the connected devices do not require Gigabit Ethernet and where simple, dependable network expansion is more important than advanced Layer 2 management features.

The switch provides a 4.8Gbps switching capacity and an 8K MAC address table. It supports automatic speed negotiation between 10Mbps and 100Mbps and includes Auto-MDI/MDIX, allowing compatible Ethernet connections without requiring separate crossover cables.

24-Port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Connectivity

The DES-1024D provides 24 RJ-45 Ethernet ports supporting 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet. This high port count makes it useful when several wired devices need to be connected within the same local network.

For a small office, the available ports can accommodate desktop computers, printers, network storage, access points and other Ethernet-enabled equipment. In a shop or business environment, the switch can help connect POS computers, office PCs, printers and other compatible network devices through one central wired connection point.

Each port automatically negotiates with the connected device to determine the appropriate supported Ethernet speed. This means a mixture of 10Mbps and 100Mbps devices can be connected to the same switch without manually configuring each port.

4.8Gbps Switching Capacity

The D-Link DES-1024D has a 4.8Gbps switching capacity. This represents the switch's overall switching fabric capability and should not be interpreted as a 4.8Gbps internet connection or a 4.8Gbps speed available to one individual device.

Each individual Fast Ethernet port supports up to 100Mbps when operating at Fast Ethernet speed. In full-duplex operation, a 100Mbps connection can provide up to 200Mbps of bidirectional aggregate transmission capacity when transmit and receive directions are considered together.

Plug-and-Play Unmanaged Operation

One of the main advantages of the DES-1024D is its unmanaged design. Unlike a smart or managed switch, it does not require users to configure VLANs, IP addresses, routing rules or management interfaces for normal switching operation.

This makes it particularly useful for users who simply need additional Ethernet ports. Connect the switch to the network, connect the required devices and allow the switch to handle the traffic automatically.

For small businesses without a dedicated network administrator, this straightforward approach can reduce installation complexity and maintenance requirements.

Auto-Negotiation and Auto-MDI/MDIX

The DES-1024D supports auto-negotiation, allowing each connected Ethernet device to establish the appropriate supported network speed. It also provides Auto-MDI/MDIX functionality, which automatically detects the cable connection type.

This reduces the need to worry about whether a crossover cable is required when connecting computers, switches or other compatible Ethernet equipment. D-Link specifically lists Auto-MDI/MDIX and automatic speed sensing among the switch's plug-and-play features.

Full-Duplex and Half-Duplex Support

The switch supports both full-duplex and half-duplex operation for Ethernet and Fast Ethernet connections. Full-duplex communication allows a compatible network connection to transmit and receive data simultaneously.

In a typical modern switched Ethernet network, full-duplex operation is preferable because it allows simultaneous two-way communication and avoids the collision behaviour associated with older shared Ethernet environments.

802.3x Flow Control

The DES-1024D supports IEEE 802.3x flow control for full-duplex operation and back-pressure flow control for half-duplex operation. Flow control helps manage situations where traffic arrives faster than a receiving interface can process it.

This feature can contribute to more orderly data transmission when multiple devices are communicating through the switch. D-Link includes flow control as part of the DES-1024D's network functionality.

8K MAC Address Table

The DES-1024D includes an 8K MAC address table. A MAC address table allows the switch to learn which network devices are reachable through particular ports and then forward Ethernet frames towards the appropriate destination.

This is one of the fundamental functions of an Ethernet switch. Instead of blindly sending every frame through every port, the switch learns device addresses and uses that information to make more efficient forwarding decisions.

802.1p Quality of Service

The DES-1024D supports IEEE 802.1p priority queuing. D-Link documentation specifies priority queues for handling traffic with different priority levels. This can be useful when time-sensitive traffic such as voice or video shares a network with ordinary data traffic.

Because the DES-1024D is an unmanaged switch, users should not expect the extensive QoS configuration options found on managed business switches. Its priority handling is designed as a straightforward built-in feature rather than a complete traffic-management platform.

Desktop or Rackmount Installation

The DES-1024D can be deployed on a desktop or installed in a suitable network rack. This flexibility makes it useful for both conventional office environments and structured network installations.

In a small office, the switch can be positioned close to the computers and network equipment. In a more organised network cabinet, its rackmountable form factor allows it to become part of a centralised network distribution setup.

The approximately 44mm height corresponds to a typical 1U rack-height form factor, while the metal housing provides a practical enclosure for a network device intended for business and workgroup environments.

Fanless and Quiet Operation

The DES-1024D is designed for quiet operation without a cooling fan. A fanless network switch can be advantageous in offices, retail environments, classrooms and other locations where unnecessary equipment noise is undesirable.

Removing the mechanical cooling fan also eliminates one common moving component from the device. D-Link describes the DES-1024D as operating quietly without fans, while its product specifications identify the housing as metal.

Metal Housing

The DES-1024D uses a metal housing designed for practical deployment in desktop and rack environments. A metal enclosure provides a more substantial physical construction than many basic plastic desktop switches.

For a network switch installed in an office rack or communications cabinet, a rigid enclosure can also help the equipment remain securely positioned alongside other networking hardware.

D-Link Green Design

D-Link markets the DES-1024D with energy-conscious design features. The switch is designed to operate with relatively low power consumption and includes D-Link Green features on supported hardware revisions. D-Link documentation also identifies RoHS compliance and recyclable packaging as part of its environmental considerations.

The actual power consumption depends on the operating state and connected network activity. The older official datasheet lists maximum AC input consumption of approximately 6.1W for the documented hardware revision, although specifications can vary by hardware revision and region.

D-Link DES-1024D Technical Specifications

Network Standards and Compatibility

The DES-1024D supports IEEE 802.3 Ethernet and IEEE 802.3u Fast Ethernet standards. This makes it compatible with conventional 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet environments.

Because Ethernet standards are designed for interoperability, the switch can be used with a wide range of compatible network equipment, including desktop computers, laptops with Ethernet adapters, network printers, IP cameras where the required network speed and power arrangement are appropriate, access points, servers and other Ethernet devices.

It is important to remember that the DES-1024D is a data-only Fast Ethernet switch. It does not provide Power over Ethernet output, so PoE-powered devices require an appropriate PoE switch or separate power solution.

Suitable for Small Offices

A 24-port switch can provide a useful central connection point for a small office. Computers, printers and other network devices can be connected without needing multiple small switches scattered around the workspace.

For an office where existing equipment operates at 10/100Mbps, the DES-1024D can provide a simple and economical way to expand wired connectivity. Its unmanaged design also means that basic installation does not require a network administrator.

Suitable for Shops and Business Networks

Retail shops and small businesses often have several network-connected systems operating at the same time. POS computers, back-office PCs, printers, internet gateways and other Ethernet devices may all require wired connectivity.

The DES-1024D provides 24 ports in one unit, making it useful where a larger number of wired connections are required but advanced switch management is unnecessary.

Suitable for CCTV Network Infrastructure

The DES-1024D can be used as part of a network infrastructure for compatible IP cameras and recording equipment when the network devices do not require PoE from the switch. Cameras would need their own appropriate power source, injector or PoE equipment.

For installations involving many IP cameras, however, network designers should carefully calculate bandwidth requirements. The DES-1024D is a 10/100 Fast Ethernet switch, not a Gigabit switch, so it is more appropriate for networks where 100Mbps port speeds are sufficient.

Suitable for Printers and Shared Devices

Network printers can be connected to the DES-1024D alongside computers and other compatible equipment. Once connected to the same local network, supported devices can communicate through the switch without requiring a separate direct cable connection between every computer and printer.

This can simplify office network layouts and make shared peripherals accessible to multiple users.

Fast Ethernet vs Gigabit Ethernet

The DES-1024D is specifically a Fast Ethernet switch, with port speeds up to 100Mbps. This is an important consideration before purchase.

If your network involves modern desktops, NAS storage, high-speed file transfers, large local backups or internet connections above 100Mbps that need to be delivered to individual wired devices, a Gigabit Ethernet switch such as a D-Link DGS-series model may be more appropriate.

On the other hand, if the connected equipment only requires 10/100Mbps and the primary goal is inexpensive wired network expansion, the DES-1024D can be a practical fit.

Why the 24-Port Design Matters

Choosing a switch with more ports than you currently need can provide room for future expansion. A 24-port model allows additional computers, printers, access points and other network equipment to be connected without immediately replacing the switch.

However, available ports should not be confused with available internet bandwidth. The switch distributes local network traffic; your internet speed is still determined by the internet connection and upstream network equipment.

Things to Consider Before Buying

• The DES-1024D is limited to 10/100Mbps Ethernet and is not a Gigabit switch.
• It is an unmanaged switch and does not provide advanced VLAN or Layer 2 management features.
• It does not provide PoE power to connected devices.
• For high-speed NAS, server or large-file-transfer environments, Gigabit Ethernet may be preferable.
• For basic 10/100Mbps network expansion, its 24-port design can be more economical than purchasing several smaller switches.
• Hardware revisions can have differences in detailed specifications, so the exact revision should be considered when precise technical specifications are important.

Who Should Buy the D-Link DES-1024D?

• Small businesses that need many 10/100 Ethernet ports.
• Offices with legacy Fast Ethernet equipment.
• Retail shops requiring multiple wired network connections.
• Schools, labs and training centres with several Ethernet devices.
• Users who prefer simple plug-and-play network installation.
• Network installers working with 10/100Mbps infrastructure.
• Customers who need a rackmountable unmanaged switch.
• Users who do not require VLAN, SNMP or advanced switch-management functions.

Who Should Choose a Gigabit Switch Instead?

If your network is being built around modern computers and Gigabit Ethernet, it is worth considering a Gigabit switch instead of the DES-1024D. Gigabit connectivity can provide up to 1000Mbps link speed per port, which is substantially higher than the 100Mbps maximum of Fast Ethernet.

This is especially relevant for NAS systems, local servers, high-resolution media files, large backups and high-speed internal file sharing. A Gigabit switch is also a more suitable choice when you want your wired local network to take advantage of an internet service above 100Mbps at the client side.

The DES-1024D remains useful where the network requirements are modest or where existing devices are limited to Fast Ethernet.

For customers who already have 10/100Mbps equipment, the DES-1024D can provide a straightforward way to add more wired ports. Customers planning a new network can also compare its Fast Ethernet capability with Gigabit alternatives before making a decision.

Unix Network serves local customers in Jessore as well as customers across Bangladesh through available delivery services. For business networking purchases, it is useful to provide information about the number of connected devices, internet speed, existing switches and whether PoE or VLAN functionality is required so that the appropriate switch can be selected.

Installation and Setup

Setting up an unmanaged switch such as the DES-1024D is straightforward. Place the switch on a suitable stable surface or install it in a compatible rack environment, connect the AC power supply, and then connect Ethernet cables to the required ports.

Because the switch automatically handles speed negotiation and MDI/MDIX detection, basic users do not need to configure individual ports before connecting standard Ethernet devices. Port LEDs provide a quick visual indication of link and activity status, making basic troubleshooting easier.

Final Thoughts on the D-Link DES-1024D

The D-Link DES-1024D 24-Port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Unmanaged Rack Mount Switch is designed for users who need a large number of wired network ports without the complexity of a managed switch. Its 24 Fast Ethernet ports, 4.8Gbps switching capacity, 8K MAC address table, Auto-MDI/MDIX, auto-negotiation, flow control, priority queuing and fanless metal construction make it a practical choice for suitable 10/100Mbps networks.

The key buying consideration is its Fast Ethernet limitation. It is a sensible choice when your existing network equipment operates at 10/100Mbps and you primarily need affordable wired expansion. For new high-performance networks, NAS systems, servers or environments where Gigabit connectivity is important, a Gigabit switch would be the better long-term choice.

For customers in Jessore and throughout Bangladesh, Unix Network can assist with selecting the appropriate networking equipment based on the number of devices, required network speed, PoE requirements and desired management features.
