Description
The D-Link DES-1008P 8-Port Desktop Switch with 4 PoE Ports is a compact, plug-and-play networking solution designed for homes, offices, shops, small businesses and basic IP surveillance or wireless networking installations. It combines eight 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet ports with four IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet ports, allowing compatible devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points and IP phones to receive both network connectivity and electrical power through a single Ethernet cable.
D-Link DES-1008P 8-Port PoE Switch in Bangladesh
For customers looking for an affordable D-Link PoE switch in Bangladesh, the DES-1008P provides a straightforward way to expand a wired network while adding PoE capability to the first four ports. Four ports support 802.3af PoE, while the remaining four ports provide standard 10/100Mbps Ethernet connectivity for computers, printers, network storage and other compatible Ethernet devices.
The switch is unmanaged, meaning there is no complicated configuration interface or network-management software required for normal operation. Connect the power adapter, plug Ethernet cables into the required ports and the switch can begin forwarding network traffic automatically. This makes it particularly suitable for users who need simple network expansion rather than advanced VLAN, routing or managed-switch features.
8 Fast Ethernet Ports with 4 PoE Ports
The DES-1008P provides eight RJ-45 10/100BASE-TX ports in total. Ports 1 through 4 support IEEE 802.3af PoE, while ports 5 through 8 provide standard Fast Ethernet connectivity without PoE.
- 8 × 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet RJ-45 ports
- 4 × IEEE 802.3af PoE-enabled ports
- 4 × standard 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports
- Auto-negotiation for compatible network devices
- Auto MDI/MDI-X on all ports
- Full-duplex and half-duplex operation
- Store-and-forward switching
- IEEE 802.3x flow control
This arrangement allows a single compact switch to serve both PoE and conventional wired networking equipment without requiring a separate PoE injector for every compatible device.
IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet
One of the main advantages of the D-Link DES-1008P is its integrated Power over Ethernet functionality. The first four ports can provide power to compatible IEEE 802.3af PoE devices through the same Ethernet cable used to carry network data.
Each PoE port can supply up to 15.4W, with a total PoE budget of up to 56W according to D-Link's specifications for this model. This can simplify installations where a network camera, access point or IP phone is located away from a convenient electrical socket.
PoE also reduces cable clutter because a compatible powered device does not need a separate power cable running back to a wall outlet when the switch itself can supply its required PoE power.
Suitable for IP Cameras
The DES-1008P can be useful in small CCTV and IP surveillance installations where compatible PoE cameras are required. A PoE-enabled camera can receive its network connection and electrical power through one Ethernet cable connected to one of the PoE ports.
For a small installation, this can make cable routing considerably simpler. Instead of installing a separate power adapter beside every compatible camera, the network cable can carry both data and power from the switch.
Before using the switch for a particular camera system, check the camera's PoE standard and power requirements. The DES-1008P is an older 802.3af Fast Ethernet PoE design, so it should not automatically be treated as equivalent to newer Gigabit PoE or PoE+ switches.
Useful for Wireless Access Points
Compatible wireless access points can also benefit from PoE connectivity. This is useful when an access point needs to be installed on a wall, ceiling or another location where a nearby power socket may not be convenient.
By using one Ethernet cable for both network communication and power, the DES-1008P can help simplify small wireless-network installations. The access point must, however, support the appropriate PoE standard and power requirements.
PoE Support for IP Phones
IP phones are another suitable application for compatible 802.3af PoE ports. A compatible IP phone can receive power and network connectivity from the switch, helping reduce the number of cables required around an office workstation.
This can be particularly convenient in small offices where multiple Ethernet devices need to be connected without installing individual power adapters for every compatible network phone.
Plug-and-Play Unmanaged Switch
The DES-1008P is an unmanaged switch, so it is designed for straightforward installation rather than advanced network administration. There is no requirement to configure VLANs, IP addresses, routing tables or management accounts for basic switching operation.
For a small office, shop, home network or simple PoE installation, this approach can save setup time and make the device easier for users without specialised networking knowledge.
Auto MDI/MDIX for Easier Installation
Auto MDI/MDIX automatically detects the required connection type on the Ethernet ports. This means users do not normally need to worry about selecting a crossover cable when connecting compatible networking equipment.
The feature makes everyday installation more convenient when connecting computers, switches, access points, cameras and other Ethernet devices.
10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Connectivity
The DES-1008P is based on Fast Ethernet rather than Gigabit Ethernet. Each port supports 10Mbps or 100Mbps Ethernet depending on the connected device and negotiated link speed.
For basic networking, internet access, compatible IP cameras and other applications that do not require Gigabit bandwidth, Fast Ethernet can still be useful. However, customers building a modern high-speed LAN should carefully consider whether 100Mbps is sufficient for their requirements.
If your network involves large file transfers, NAS storage, high-resolution video workflows or multiple modern computers exchanging data locally, a Gigabit PoE switch may be a better long-term choice.
1.6Gbps Switching Fabric
The DES-1008P has a 1.6Gbps switching fabric. This provides the internal switching capacity required for its eight 10/100Mbps ports and allows the switch to forward network traffic without requiring manual configuration.
The actual throughput experienced by an individual connection depends on the negotiated Ethernet speed, network traffic, cabling and connected equipment. The 1.6Gbps figure should therefore be understood as the switch's internal switching capacity rather than the speed of an individual Ethernet port.
Store-and-Forward Switching
The DES-1008P uses store-and-forward switching. In this method, the switch receives and checks an Ethernet frame before forwarding it to the appropriate destination port.
This switching approach helps the device handle network traffic reliably and discard packets that do not meet the necessary frame-checking requirements before forwarding traffic across the network.
Compact Desktop Design
The D-Link DES-1008P has a compact desktop form factor measuring approximately 140 x 77 x 27mm for the documented revision. Its small footprint makes it suitable for placement on a desk, shelf, networking cabinet or other space where a larger rack-mounted switch would be unnecessary.
The switch is also designed for quiet operation, making it suitable for office environments and other areas where unnecessary fan noise can be inconvenient.
Wall-Mountable Design
For installations where desktop space is limited, the DES-1008P can also be wall-mounted. This can be useful in small offices, shops, network cabinets and CCTV installations where the switch needs to be positioned close to the cable entry point without occupying valuable desk or shelf space.
LED Indicators for Network Monitoring
LED indicators provide basic visual information about power, PoE status, link activity and network speed. These indicators can help identify whether a connected device is communicating correctly and whether a PoE connection is active.
For basic troubleshooting, checking the relevant port LED can quickly indicate whether an Ethernet connection has been established.
Power Budget and PoE Considerations
The total PoE budget is an important consideration when connecting multiple powered devices. The DES-1008P provides up to 56W of total PoE power, while an individual PoE-enabled port can supply up to 15.4W.
For example, connecting several low-power compatible devices can be practical within the overall budget. However, users should calculate the expected power requirements of all connected PoE devices before installation rather than assuming that all four ports can continuously deliver their maximum output simultaneously.
PoE performance can also be affected by cable quality, cable length, device requirements and the characteristics of the connected equipment.

DES-1008P for Small Office Networking
The DES-1008P can be a practical solution for a small office that needs several wired Ethernet connections alongside a few PoE-powered devices. Computers, printers and other standard Ethernet equipment can use the non-PoE ports, while compatible IP phones, access points or cameras can use the four PoE ports.
Its unmanaged design is particularly suitable when the network does not require VLAN segmentation, advanced traffic management, monitoring or Layer 3 routing.
DES-1008P for Shops and Small Businesses
Retail shops and small businesses can use the switch as a basic network expansion device for computers, printers, POS-related Ethernet equipment and compatible surveillance or wireless devices.
The compact design makes it easy to position close to existing network cabling. PoE can also be useful when a compatible camera or wireless access point needs to be installed in a location where running a separate power cable would be inconvenient.
DES-1008P for Small CCTV Installations
For a small IP surveillance setup using compatible 802.3af cameras, the four PoE ports can provide a convenient combination of network connectivity and power. The remaining four ports can be used for other Ethernet devices such as a computer, recorder or network equipment, depending on the installation.
Before choosing this switch for a CCTV system, verify the camera's Ethernet speed and PoE requirements. Newer cameras may require Gigabit Ethernet, PoE+ or a higher power budget, in which case a newer PoE switch may be more appropriate.
DES-1008P for Home Networking
At home, the switch can expand the number of wired network connections available from a router or another Ethernet network device. Computers, printers, media devices and compatible PoE equipment can be connected without requiring a managed networking system.
For ordinary internet access where the internet connection and connected devices operate comfortably within Fast Ethernet limits, the DES-1008P can provide a simple networking solution. Things to Consider Before Buying
The most important consideration is that the DES-1008P is a 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet switch. It is not a Gigabit switch. If your network requires 1000Mbps connections between computers, NAS devices, servers or modern access points, choose a Gigabit PoE switch instead.
PoE compatibility is another important consideration. The DES-1008P uses IEEE 802.3af PoE on four ports. Check the PoE standard and power requirement of every powered device before purchasing.
It is also an unmanaged switch, so it is not intended for networks that require advanced VLAN configuration, traffic policies, Layer 3 routing, detailed monitoring or centralised management.
DES-1008P vs a Modern Gigabit PoE Switch
The DES-1008P makes sense when affordability, simplicity and 802.3af Fast Ethernet PoE are the primary requirements. However, a modern Gigabit PoE switch may be a better choice for a new network that needs greater bandwidth and longer-term flexibility.
For example, users deploying modern wireless access points, high-resolution IP cameras, NAS storage or multiple high-speed workstations should consider Gigabit Ethernet. The choice should be based on the capabilities of the connected equipment rather than the number of ports alone.
Who Should Buy the D-Link DES-1008P?
- Small offices needing simple Ethernet expansion
- Shops requiring a compact network switch
- Users with compatible IEEE 802.3af IP cameras
- Small wireless-network installations using compatible PoE access points
- Businesses using compatible PoE IP phones
- Home users who need several additional Fast Ethernet ports
- Installations where an unmanaged plug-and-play switch is preferred
- Users who specifically need four 802.3af PoE ports
Who May Need a Different Switch?
A Gigabit PoE switch should be considered if the network requires 1000Mbps Ethernet. Likewise, a PoE+ switch may be more appropriate when powered devices require more than the 802.3af power level supported by this model.
Users who need VLANs, link aggregation, advanced QoS, Layer 3 routing, SNMP monitoring or detailed network management should also consider a managed switch rather than the DES-1008P.
Buying Guide for a PoE Switch in Bangladesh
When selecting a PoE switch, start by counting the number of wired devices and PoE devices that need to be connected. Then check the Ethernet speed requirements and PoE standard of each powered device.
- Check the total number of Ethernet ports required.
- Count how many devices actually need PoE.
- Check whether your devices use 802.3af, 802.3at or another PoE standard.
- Calculate the combined power requirement of PoE devices.
- Check whether 10/100Mbps or Gigabit Ethernet is required.
- Consider whether the switch needs advanced management features.
- Choose a suitable installation location and cable arrangement.
This approach helps prevent choosing a switch based only on port count while overlooking important requirements such as network speed and available PoE power.
