Things to Check Before Buying a Second-Hand HP EliteBook 840 G5
Check Battery Health
Battery capacity decreases naturally with age and usage. Since the EliteBook 840 G5 is an older laptop generation, battery condition is particularly important when buying second-hand.
Check the battery health report and test the actual backup time instead of relying only on the battery percentage shown in Windows.
Check Display Condition
Inspect the display carefully for dead pixels, bright spots, dark spots, lines, flickering, pressure marks, discoloration, and uneven brightness.
Check Keyboard and Touchpad
Test every keyboard key, touchpad button, scrolling function, clicking function, and keyboard backlight if the particular configuration includes one.
Check Hinges
Open and close the laptop several times. The hinges should move smoothly without excessive looseness, cracking sounds, or unusual resistance.
Check USB and Other Ports
Test the USB ports, USB Type-C, HDMI, Ethernet, audio jack, charging port, and other available connections.
Check SSD Health
Check the health of the 256GB SSD before purchasing. An SSD can become worn after years of use, so checking its condition is an important part of buying a second-hand laptop.
Check RAM
Confirm that the laptop contains the advertised 8GB RAM. If you plan to upgrade later, check the available memory slots and supported capacity.
Check Processor
Verify the actual Intel Core i5 8th Gen processor using Windows System Information, Task Manager, BIOS, or another reliable hardware identification tool.
Check Physical Condition
Inspect the entire laptop for cracks, dents, excessive scratches, loose hinges, damaged ports, missing screws, broken plastic, and signs of previous repair.
Check Charger
Make sure the laptop comes with a compatible HP charger and confirm that the charger and charging port work correctly.
