AC1200 Dual-Band WiFi
The Mercusys AC12 uses two separate WiFi bands to provide greater flexibility.
The 2.4GHz band is suitable for devices that are farther away from the router because it generally provides better coverage and wall penetration. It works well for browsing, messaging, social media, smart devices, and normal internet usage.
The 5GHz band provides higher wireless throughput and is ideal for devices located closer to the router. It is particularly useful for HD streaming, video calls, large downloads, and gaming.
2.4GHz vs 5GHz
| Feature | 2.4GHz | 5GHz |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum wireless speed | Up to 300Mbps | Up to 867Mbps |
| Coverage | Generally wider | Generally shorter |
| Wall penetration | Better | Lower |
| Best suited for | Browsing and smart devices | Streaming and high-speed usage |
| Interference | Usually higher | Usually lower |
Actual performance depends on your internet connection, connected device, distance, walls, interference, and network traffic.
Four External Antennas
The AC12 features four external antennas designed to provide broad wireless coverage throughout a typical home or small office.
The external antenna design helps distribute the wireless signal across the surrounding area, making the router suitable for connecting multiple devices around the house.
For the best results, place the router:
- In an open area
- Away from thick walls
- Away from large metal objects
- At a reasonable height
- Near the center of the coverage area
Router placement can have a significant effect on real-world WiFi performance.
Wireless Performance
The AC12 is designed for households that need more than basic single-band wireless connectivity.
It can handle everyday activities such as:
- Web browsing
- Facebook and social media
- YouTube
- Online classes
- Video conferencing
- Music streaming
- HD video streaming
- File downloads
- Smartphone usage
- Smart TV connectivity
The dual-band design also makes it possible to distribute devices between the two networks and reduce unnecessary congestion.
Gaming Performance
The Mercusys AC12 can provide a good wireless connection for casual and regular online gaming.
Connecting a gaming PC, console, or smartphone to the 5GHz network can provide higher wireless throughput when the gaming device is reasonably close to the router.
It can be used for:
- PC gaming
- PlayStation
- Xbox
- Mobile gaming
- Online multiplayer games
- Game downloads
- Gaming laptops
However, gaming performance is not determined by router speed alone. Ping, latency, ISP routing, WiFi interference, server distance, and network congestion can have a much greater effect on online gaming.
For competitive gaming, a wired Ethernet connection is generally preferable whenever practical.
Streaming Performance
The 5GHz network makes the AC12 suitable for modern streaming requirements.
It can be used for:
- YouTube
- HD movies
- TV shows
- Live streaming
- Sports
- Video calls
- Online learning
- Smart TV applications
Multiple devices can share the network, although overall performance depends on the available internet bandwidth and the number of active users.
Beamforming Technology
The AC12 uses beamforming technology to improve wireless communication with compatible connected devices.
Instead of distributing the signal equally in all directions, beamforming helps focus wireless transmission toward connected devices.
This can improve connection stability and wireless efficiency in suitable conditions.
Guest Network
The router supports a guest network, allowing visitors to access the internet through a separate WiFi connection.
This can be useful for:
- Homes
- Offices
- Shops
- Small businesses
- Guest rooms
A separate guest network means you do not need to provide visitors with the password used by your primary WiFi network.
Parental Controls
The AC12 provides parental-control functionality that can help users manage internet access for specific devices.
Parents can use network-management features to control how certain devices access the internet according to their household requirements.
This can be useful for managing children's internet usage and creating appropriate online schedules.
IPTV Support
The router supports IPTV functionality, making it suitable for internet-based television services that require compatible network configuration.
This allows the router to be incorporated into certain home entertainment setups alongside regular internet access.
IPv6 Support
The AC12 supports IPv6, allowing it to work with modern internet networks that use the newer Internet Protocol.
IPv6 support helps make the router more suitable for current and future network environments.
Wired Network Connectivity
The AC12 can also connect wired devices through its Ethernet ports.
Wired connections are useful for devices such as:
- Desktop computers
- Gaming consoles
- Smart TVs
- Network printers
- DVR/NVR systems
- Other Ethernet-enabled equipment
A wired connection can provide greater stability than WiFi, particularly for gaming, desktop computers, and other devices that remain in a fixed location.
Easy Installation
The AC12 is designed to be simple to configure for everyday users.
A typical setup process involves:
- Connect your internet connection to the router.
- Connect the power adapter.
- Connect your smartphone, laptop, or PC to the router.
- Open the router's setup interface.
- Configure the internet connection.
- Create your WiFi name and password.
- Connect your devices.
Once configured, smartphones, laptops, TVs, gaming consoles, and other wireless devices can connect to the network.
Home and Small Office Use
The Mercusys AC12 is suitable for a variety of environments.
Home
It can provide WiFi for:
- Smartphones
- Laptops
- Smart TVs
- Tablets
- Gaming consoles
- Smart home devices
Small Office
It can also be used for:
- Office laptops
- Desktop PCs
- Smartphones
- Printers
- Internet-connected equipment
- Guest WiFi
For very large offices or buildings with multiple floors, a more advanced access-point or mesh networking system may be preferable.
Security Features
The AC12 includes network-management and wireless-security features designed to help protect your connection.
Useful features can include:
- Wireless password protection
- WPA/WPA2 security
- Guest network
- Firewall
- Access control
- Parental controls
- WPS
- Port forwarding
- Network management
Using a strong WiFi password and regularly updating router software, when updates are available, can help maintain network security.
